Chronological X-Men - Days of Future Past Part 5 Review

Days of Future Past.

The Uncanny X-Men #151 – X-Men Minus One
The Uncanny X-Men #152 – The Hellfire Gambit

It appears that some time has passed since the last issue because Carol isn’t hanging around the mansion (more of a plot device because it works best if she’s not here for this) on top of that Scott appears to be back with the team and now Kitty’s parents have withdrawn her from Xavier’s school and now placed her in the Massachusetts Academy that Emma Frost runs. There’s a little hiccup though, why didn’t the X-Men ever bother to check and see if Emma was truly dead after their last encounter? On top of that Kitty’s parents… Jean mindwiped them into thinking that being at Xavier’s was the best for her, so did this wear off once Phoenix died? Charles said that he could sense no psychic altering on Emma’s part to their minds, but could that be because of what Phoenix did to them altered them so drastically that anything Emma did would be over shadowed by it? The main plot revolves around Emma bringing Kitty to the Academy in order to come in contact with Storm to switch bodies with her so she can defeat the X-Men once they’ve been beaten down by Sentinels. This itself has a few problems, Emma had to know in advance that someone would come with Kitty to her new school, I suppose that Emma could have switched with anyone, but given Emma and Ororo’s history it seems a little too easy that it be her she switches with. On top of that, I know the Sentinels can be programmed, but we would have to assume that Emma mindwiped Henry or whoever programmed them into leaving out the Inner Circle’s distinct DNA code so they wouldn’t be attacked, that becomes an issue because like I said Emma would had to have known in advance who she would be switching bodies with. The idea that Emma didn’t brainwash Kitty’s parents goes out the window when at the very end Emma says that since the X-Men won they can have Kitty. All in all it was good, I’m glad to see Emma back but this entire story seemed to come out of nowhere and it left a lot of unanswered questions.

Dazzler #8 – Hell… Hell Is For Harry!
Dazzler #9 – The Sound and The Fury!

Well we learn the reason why the Techmaster hired The Enforcers to kill Harry. It turns out that years before Harry took Alison on as a client Harry worked with Billy Bitzer (now Techmaster) who created light shows for his clients. One night things went horribly wrong and ultimately Billy was struck with a bolt of electricity so strong that it melted a large portion of his face and caused him to have to have both of his hands amputated. I guess this is why Harry has been so intent on finding out all about Alison’s light show and how she causes them. Alison ends up having to get involved and fight the Enforcers after they break into her apartment and take Harry the end result is Harry learns that Alison is a mutant. I could say it’s odd that he’s okay with it, but he sees it as a huge marketing potential, and on the other end he probably assumes that since the light show is a part of her because of her mutant powers that she can’t hurt herself with them. Alison doesn’t have any time to rest after convincing Harry not to publically out her as a mutant because she is soon taken hostage by Mr. Meeker and his assistant who had been following her around for some time now. Meeker takes her to a government facility to test her energy abilities under the guise of creating alternative energy recourses. We meet Quasar, Solarr, Nuklo and Klaw for the first time (in an X-book, not their first actual appearances) and Klaw takes advantage of Alison and manipulates her into allowing him to escape. The two battle and unfortunately Klaw gets too close to Alison and she absorbs all of him, Quasar tries to talk Alison down but he’s unsuccessful when the rest of Project Pegasus insists on running more tests on Alison. Meanwhile a mysterious figure watches the events on a monitor screen. I actually liked these two issues, my only problem was that they both are plots that have been done to death (especially in this genre) and other than Alison’s uniquely specific mutant powers nothing new is brought to the table.

Dazzler #10 – In the Darkness… a Light!
Dazzler #11 - …Lest Ye Be Judged!

Okay here we have what is possibly the strangest crossover that we’ve had so far. Galactus (the first time he’s been featured in an X-book) abducts Alison after monitoring her for some time now. He and his robot servant Drone R-11 believe that she alone contains the power to stop Galactus’ current herald Terrax the Tamer. It turns out Terrax’s lust for power took over him and he took over a planet of his own that he was supposed to feed to Galactus, this didn’t go over too well with his boss and Terrax fled into a black hole in order to save himself from his master’s wrath. Being that Dazzler’s mutant power involves light she can fend off the effects of the black hole without causing it to self destruct. Galactus infuses her with his power and pretty much shoots her into the black hole with the vague promise that if Dazzler succeeds he might consider not devouring Earth. After some not so subtle help from Drone R-11 Dazzler is able to overpower and knock out Terrax, she plans to leave him there but thinks better of it when it dawns on her that Galactus will just send someone after her for failing him too. Back on Earth everyone connected to Alison is wondering just what the heck has happened to her. I get the point of this but it’s way too odd that all of Alison’s band, her manager, Harry, Paul and her father all show up at the exact same time at her apartment. And it was a little odd that instead of assuming that Alison was sick her father just assumed that she was strung out on drugs and walked out. There were a few interesting things that I wish they'd touch on more, the idea of Alison not needing music to use her powers. I get that she's a singer and that music will always be a part of the character, but it was nice for it not to be the central focus of what she's doing, and on top of that we get to see how truly powerful the character can be once you strip her away from all her gimmicks.

What If? #33 – What If Dazzler Had Become The Herald Of Galactus?

So now it’s time to see what would have happened if Galactus killed Terrax and appointed Dazzler his new herald. The same deal as before is on the table, Alison helps Galactus and he’ll leave Earth alone. She goes from planet to planet searching for suitable ones for him to eat and the entire time Alison has been feeding him planets that aren’t capable of sustaining life. Eventually she comes across a planet that seems to be deserted and she sends for her master, unfortunately Dazzler quickly discovers that the plant life can actually speak. Somehow Galactus’ deems that his machines were wrong and that it turns out this planet isn’t suitable for consumption at all. It seems like Alison is getting through to the planet eater – unfortunately she’s soon ambushed by an alien armada and attacked. This sends Galactus over the edge and he obliterates them all. Feeling sorry for what has happened he offers Alison a way out of her deal if she wants it. She returns to Earth only to find that so much time has passed since she left that there is no longer any life left on her home planet. This particular story ends with Alison returning to Galactus willingly and continues to feed him planets without any life on them.

Marvel Fanfare #1 –Fast Descent into Hell!
Marvel Fanfare #2 – To Sacrifice My Soul!
Marvel Fanfare #3 – Into the Land of Death!
Marvel Fanfare #4 – Lost Souls!

This next four part story sends us back into the Savage Land and introduces us to Vertigo – a Savage Land mutate, she doesn’t actually speak in this story but she makes multiple appearances over the years. We learn that Zaladane didn’t die the last time the X-Men encountered her. Karl/Sauron, Tanya and Candy are all back and Warren teams up with Spider-Man and Ka-Zar to try to stop the Neo-Mutants from taking over the Savage Land. I’m only guessing at the placement of this particular story, but I assume that this happened while Angel had departed from the X-Men because he refused to work with Logan – this fits not only because for most of the story Warren acts alone, but when he does mention Logan it’s clear that he doesn’t like him. The story also takes place after Scott rejoins the X-Men and Kitty has re-enrolled at the Xavier Institute. Both aren’t in this story but Kurt mentions that Scott is ill, I guess he caught whatever bug Kitty had a few issues ago in the Uncanny X-Men. I think this particular story would have worked better as a giant sized special or an annual instead of a story spread out over four issues – it wasn’t that it was a bad story it’s just that the Savage Land is always a mixed bag. I do like Zaladane and Vertigo, but I really didn’t need a lot of the other characters. Brainchild devolving the X-Men and Karl feeding off of them to return them to normal was good, but it was expected that he’d eventually turn into Sauron. Zaladane didn’t really do anything to move the plot along, and honestly she could have been left out of the story altogether. It was a nice touch to team up Peter and Warren, but Peter didn’t spend enough time as Spider-Man for it to even make sense, devolving Warren I guess is going to serve as a bridge to start to get him to come around and not hating Logan so much – so I guess that’s okay. I think it would have been better if this story was done a little later in the time line. They could have done Warren, Carol and Rogue and had a devolved Carol come face to face with Rogue, and maybe have Logan pull Carol back which also would have allowed Warren to see that Logan isn’t that bad of a guy and how easily it is to go over that ledge. I guess at the end of the day what I’m trying to say is the story is good, but it would have been better with a few different characters switched out and condensed.

Chronological X-Men - Days of Future Past Part 3 Review

Days of Future Past.

Spider-Woman #37 – Who Am I?
Spider-Woman #38 – Criminal At Large

You know I’ve never read a single issue of Spider-Woman before so I don’t know what’s going on with pretty much every character involved with this story that aren’t X-Men centric. This would be a problem except for the fact that there’s a large portion of the book is devoted to flashbacks and exposition. We see what Black Tom Cassidy and Juggernaut have been up to ever since they contracted Arcade to kill the X-Men. We do get the first appearance of Siryn which actually works for me because it’s one more character that I’m already familiar with but I do wish that they had spent a little more time introducing her. Granted I needed the backstory for Spider-Woman but at the same time it’s odd that so much of the issue was devoted to exposing new readers to the exploits of Jessica Drew but Siryn has apparently working and training with her uncle Black Tom off of any book. Black Tom framing Spider-Woman for the treasury robbery he committed is nothing new (the villains are always trying to portray the hero as a bad guy) so there’s nothing much to talk about there. The X-Men go off to investigate what set Cerebro off (obviously it ends up being Siryn since Tom and Cain have already been established as characters) and end up working with Spider-Woman to clear her name and to take down the trio of villains. One thing I didn’t really like was a bit odd. I know that Tom’s identity is pretty much publicly known so by default relative would be exposed but was it really Tom’s best move to tell the X-Men in front of police to take care of his niece Theresa. It would be too easy to just track the activity of a ‘Theresa Cassidy’ and her locations at any given point could lead to the revelation of who is really an X-Man. But... maybe that was Tom’s plan all along? When I was done with this story I actually wanted to start reading all of Jessica Drew's exploits - so I guess that's a sign of good story telling.

The Uncanny X-Men #148 – Cry, Mutant

This issue takes place right after the recent Spider-Woman story. Sean, Illyana and Moira haven’t returned to their respective homes (yet Alex, Lorna, Bobby and Amanda have-,) Magneto makes his reappearance in the city that has suddenly appeared near the island that Scott and Lee have washed up on when their ship capsized. Sean meets Theresa for the first time (so first time Siryn appears in an X-book) and their instant bond bothers Moira because she’s afraid of ever having another child after what happened with her son Kevin. Jessica Drew arrives at the mansion (I’m assuming that she took Theresa there) and she, Kitty, Ororo and Stevie all go to a club to watch Dazzler perform. We get the first appearance of Caliban who is so desperate for a friend that he tries to kidnap Kitty, thankfully Storm, Spider-Woman and Dazzler manage to save Kitty and try to convince Caliban to join the X-Men. Scott and Lee bump heads when she tries to kiss him and the two fight and end up making up – oh well. One thing that’s interesting is that Illyana’s middle name is ‘Natalyanovna’ but later they end up changing it to: Nikolaevna.

The Uncanny X-Men #149 – And The Dead Shall Bury The Living

We get a series of flashbacks showing the X-Men’s various battles with Magneto over the years. Kitty tries to debut a new version of her costume which – is colorful to say the least. Charles is upset and yells at her for interrupting his ‘research’ and that she hasn’t earned an individualized costume that it comes when she graduates the school. I think that’s kind of odd because Colossus, Nightcrawler, Storm, Banshee, Sunfire, Warpath and Wolverine never got the ‘school uniforms’ (they do use them later in the years as training uniforms… so I guess that counts for something) the strange thing I find about this is you can’t even argue that Kurt couldn’t wear one because of his tail hands and feet because Warren had an altered costume for his wings. Speaking of Warren – he’s still acting like a brat and won’t be an X-Man if Logan is, real convenient when Ororo is thrown down into a pit and the only ones who can save her are Kitty and Kurt. Garokk is back, he didn’t die when he and Ororo last fought, instead he was wounded and Magneto found him and he is now guarding Magneto’s old base. Kitty phases to keep Garokk from killing Ororo but it causes him to go falling over the ledge and plummeting to his death. Okay so they fixed Ororo having killed Garokk, but Kurt, Jean, Piotr, Kitty and Logan have all killed someone – it seems odd for Warren to take a stand against Logan. You can argue that Kitty was self defense, Kurt was an accident, and Piotr because he felt badly for Moira’s son dying but Jean still killed willingly and gleefully yet Warren seems to have no problem when he worked with her. Another odd thing is hearing Charles say he doesn’t know about Magneto’s origins, the history the two of them have is so intertwined that they’re almost two sides of the same character so it’s odd seeing it without the context of the retcon. Don’t get me wrong.. the issue individually is a good issue, and it’s a good starting off point for new readers – I just found it a little hard to swallow all the contextual errors that actually don’t even exist yet.

The Uncanny X-Men #150 – I, Magneto…

Okay we get some revelations with this one, we see Carol Danvers for the first time in an X-book (she’ll play a major role with certain things later on) and it was kind of odd because of the reason for her spending time with the X-Men hasn’t actually happened yet – it’s funny because there’s a blurb that basically says ‘hey this hasn’t happened yet but be sure to read it when it does’ type of thing. We learn that Ororo has indeed killed someone before when she was younger and this is something that weighs with her heavily to this day. So much so that she hesitates in slitting Magneto’s throat long enough for him to wake up and attack her. We officially learn that Magneto was a Holocaust victim after he believes that he has killed Kitty. That’s something I thought was odd too, this is a double sized issue, yet the ending is still rushed. One panel Kitty is dead and Ororo is grieving over her dead body and then the next panel Kitty is alive and well on the beach hanging out with the rest of the X-Men while they wait for their transportation to be fixed. And what makes this odd isn’t that they didn’t have room for exposition but in a double-sized issue the only room they allotted for that particular scene was a blurb that said and I quote: ‘miraculously – because she was phasing at the time – Kitty survived Magneto’s energy blast.’ Really they couldn’t have done a better job with that? Really?

Bizarre Adventures #27 Phoenix/Iceman: Winter Carnival/Nightcrawler: Show Me The Way To Go Home

This particular book gives us three full length stories each focusing on an untold tale of the X-Men. The first story starts off with Jean’s sister Sara visiting Jean’s grave and flashes back on an adventure the two of them shared shortly after Jean revealed herself as Phoenix and a mutant to Sara. We learn how Jean’s telepathic powers initially grew out of control when her childhood best friend Annie died in her arms. This then sets it up that Charles visited Jean when she became too withdrawn. We learn that Sara is afraid that her children will end up being mutants. There is a little mistake; Sara keeps talking about her son ‘Tommy’ yet Sara’s children’s names are later established as being Joey and Gailyn. Jean and Sara get abducted by Attuma – a water dweller who wants revenge on the surface world and Namor by taking mutant women from above water and  umm.. basically breed them with his people to create a super powered army. The story was good, but I really didn’t need to read it at all, it was interesting to see that Jean’s mind wipe she performed on her sister to make her forget these things happened was undone when she died – I just wish that this was something that was followed up on like how she wiped Kitty’s parents minds when Emma Frost abducted the X-Men and Kitty. The next story shows us Bobby’s during his college years. He’s spending the winter break with some of his old friends (I’m not sure where they came from considering Bobby was with the X-Men since he was around 15 and stayed with the team until after he had turned 18. But the next time we see Bobby in an X-book he’s drinking beer – now assuming that he’s not doing it illegally- so it’s possible that Bobby could have met his friends in the three year gap. Bobby gets a taste of freedom and the spotlight when he’s forced to act as Iceman after someone tries to steal one of the computers from the school. He stops the thieves and participates in the winter carnival. Later Bobby learns that one of the professors staged the robbery to cover up for a real robbery later, Bobby finds out and takes the man down. I actually liked this story, probably more than Jean’s but it just seems kind of weird. The final story shows the X-Men encountering ‘half a mutant’ it turns out to be Vanisher who has only half teleported back to this world – the other half of him is trapped in another dimension. Kurt gets mixed up in it and the two of them travel through multiple realities (one of which has both of them as women, another reality has the two of them as animals) before landing in another dimension where the two of them are regarded as ‘Gods’ simply because they are men. Ultimately they end up back on Earth and whole so this isn’t really anything big – at least I don’t think so – but there was one thing I found interesting. One of the three women who declare Kurt and Vanisher ‘gods’ seems to look an awful lot like Roma – a character who is tied very closely to Excalibur down the road and is connected to Captain Britain. For me this was by far the best story out of all three, and it’s the first time that Kurt has actually felt like the version of him that I enjoyed so much as a child (he’s still not up to that point in the main book) the one thing that I could consider it to be a downside is that this story is essentially comic relief and I don’t usually go for that in comics but it really works here. And I can’t get the image and conversation Kurt has when he tries to teleport for the first time in this new dimension. All in all these stories are good, I think the only one that could be considered even remotely strong enough to stand on it’s own would be Kurt’s story but the entire issue is really a case of the sum being much greater than it’s parts.

Chronological X-Men - The Phoenix Saga Part 3 Review

The Phoenix Saga!

Marvel Team-Up #69 Night of the Living God!
Marvel Team-Up #70 Whom Gods Destroy!

Well this time out we learn what’s been going on with Alex and Lorna since Eric the Red’s mind control wore off. Personally I would have liked to have seen a bit of Lorna and Alex coming out of their altered states and their decision to go to Muir Isle in order to sort things out, instead of it being the next time we see them they’re both already there. In the middle of a random walk the pair are ambushed by the Living Pharaoh’s henchmen- a battle ensues the results of it leave Alex kidnapped and Lorna thrown off of the cliff into the sea and left for dead. It turns out since the last time we saw The Living Pharaoh he’s altered his plans a bit from killing Alex in order to become the dominant half of their connection and permanently get Alex’s powers to imprisoning Alex in a device that will amplify Alex’s abilities to the point where Ahmet Abdol can access them on his own. Spider-Man gets involved when he runs into the Pharaoh’s goons at college and when he learns that they’ve kidnapped someone he follows them in an attempt to free Havok. Meanwhile Lorna crawls her way back to the research facility and tries to contact the X-Men and after being unable to reach them she calls Hank for help. The Pharaoh absorbs enough of Alex’s powers and transforms into the Living Monolith once again and Spider-Man nearly gets himself killed only to be saved by Thor. The two team up and Thor distracts the Living Monolith long enough for Spider-Man to free Alex without killing him. With the Living Monolith defeated Thor takes Alex back to Muir Isle to look for Lorna. I’m surprised this was another little mash up that I enjoyed – if this trend keeps up I might actually become a fan of these little mini crossovers.

(The Uncanny)X-Men #111 Mindgames!
Classic X-Men #17 A Taste for Vengeance!

This story spins directly out of the events of Marvel Team-Up but I’m getting ahead of myself here, first I need to start with the back up feature even though that will spoil everything. The back up story shows Jean trying to have a peaceful day out and about only to run into Mesmero, an old enemy of the X-Men. He uses his abilities on her and she’s quickly under his mind control. This I find a little odd because of the fact that Phoenix should be so much more powerful than that but oh well. He takes her back to his place and after trying to have his way with her (now he meets resistance with Phoenix) Mesmero decides to use Jean to help him take down all of the other X-Men and bring them under his power. One by one the X-Men fall and Mesmero quickly becomes bored and after seeing a picture of Kurt at his old circus he gets the idea to imprison them all within a circus and force them to perform nightly. The additional pages aren’t really needed, they just quickly recap how Hank lost touch with the X-Men and it ends with him arriving at the circus finding the new team there. Hank is soon discovered and beaten in front of Logan which sends him into a rage powerful enough to allow him to break free of Mesmero’s mind control, one by one he breaks the X-Men out of their brainwashed state and the group reforms to take on Mesmero only to find out that he has already been defeated by none other than Magneto.

(The Uncanny)X-Men #112 Magneto Triumphant!
 Classic X-Men #18 Stalking Life

Only one real ‘first’ here and that is the first appearance of Magneto’s robot assistant ‘Nanny.’ The additional pages aren’t really required, it’s just the inner thoughts of the X-Men and Magneto when they all come face to face, and the other page is just an all out brawl between Phoenix and Magneto, nothing worth spending too much time covering. One thing I do wish they would just clear up is the whole Robot Magneto thing. If Magneto has no idea who Mesmero is then who exactly built the robot and what was the point of it? Magneto is out for blood and has built a device that contains each X-Man individually and reduces them to nothing more than that of a six-month old child, just like he was. The only difference is that their bodies don’t de-age and they’re forced to live in their minds fully aware of everything that is going on around them. The back up feature is alright, but kind of boring. Jean wants some alone time to figure everything out, so naturally Logan decides that he knows what’s best for her and teams up with Kurt and Sean to ‘hunt’ Jean and force her to use her powers in a more controlled and streamlined way than she has been using them. Honestly, I didn’t like the backup feature and it suffered for not having it be written by Chris Claremont.

(The Uncanny)X-Men #113 Showdown!
 Classic X-Men #19 I, Magneto!

The X-Men are still being ‘taken care of’ by Nanny and it’s driving them mad. Logan is gong into a rage that’s only made worse by the fact that he cannot do anything about it and Ororo can’t help but think back to her childhood when she was ‘working’ under Achmed El-Gibar and we see more of how he trained her how to be a master thief, Kurt is taking this worse than anyone (odd considering Ororo’s claustrophobia) and having a bit of a mental crisis because he can’t understand why Charles hasn’t come to help them if he was honest when he said that he is constantly monitors the X-Men with his telepathic powers. Eventually Ororo breaks free and frees the rest of the team. A huge battle ensues and causes the volcano they are under to erupt. Magneto frees himself (and I assume he returns to Asteroid M) leaving the X-Men to perish in the eruption, only he doesn’t see the giant flaming bird coming out right behind him and Jean and Hank crash into the land. The strain proves too much for Jean and she passes out leaving Hank to try to carry her through the snow. The back up feature shows a time in Magneto’s life after his wife left him but before he became Magneto. He’s been working with a group of people to hunt down members of the Nazi party that were responsible for what happened to his parents when he was a child. Eventually he runs into a man who ends up working for the people Magneto has been teaming up with. Naturally this doesn’t end well with his bosses and they kill Isabelle, a woman who was Magneto’s doctor, and possibly more than that, right in front of his eyes. This sends him into a rage and Magneto kills them, once again he is left all alone. It was good, but I don’t know where it belongs at this point in the mythology. It will get easier in the future when they flesh out more of Charles and Magneto’s past, but right now it feels sort of displaced.

The Uncanny X-Men #114 Desolation
Classic X-Men #20 Mother of the Bride

Well it took long enough but this is the first time they have used ‘The Uncanny X-Men’ as the cover title on the book. Jean and Hank find their way out of Antarctica and return to the Xavier Institute to tell Charles about the death of the other X-Men. We find out that the X-Men actually didn’t die but they managed to work together long enough to tunnel into an entrance to the Savage Land. Obviously each side of the fence thinks the other side died. It appears that Scott isn’t mourning Jean’s death enough for Ororo and she confronts him just as he starts to piece together memories of his childhood and notices just how much he looks like Corsair. We learn that Sauron survived (but we already knew that because of The Hidden Years) and has now fed off of Storm and is ready to fight the X-Men once again. The back up feature I actually liked, but honestly it didn’t fit. Storm goes on vacation and meets a woman who just lost her husband. Ororo goes to investigate and learns that the man didn’t really die but had been exposed to chemicals from his job and has become a zombie. It’s a nice little filler, but I don’t know where it is supposed to fit, there really isn’t much to say about it but I liked it.

The Uncanny X-Men #115 Visions of Death!
 Classic X-Men #21 First Love

I’ll start with the backup story simply because it takes place before the events of last issue. We see Piotr struggle with existing in the Savage Land. He manages to save a group of ‘Fall People’ but one of them dies. Piotr bonds with the other two when they don’t reject him after seeing his metal state. Piotr feels love for the first time and it’s implied that he has sex with one of, if not both of the two women he saved. Okay, I swear it doesn’t seem as creepy as it sounds like. The additional pages show Jean, Charles and Lilandra dealing with the recent ‘deaths’ of the X-Men. Jean is struggling with the fluctuating powers and how she has no one to turn to. The main story shows us that Karl Lykos and Ka-Zar are working together to take down Zaladane (her first appearance in the X-Men) and the Sun People from raising Garook the Petrified Man that Zaladane worships. We see Kirk Marston moments before Zaladane uses him as a vessel for Garokk. Scott and Logan are at odds again when Scott wants to leave the Savage Land to return to Charles and Logan wants to stay in the Savage Land and help Karl and Ka-Zar take down Zaladane. The issue ends with a massive snow storm erupting that threatens to destroy all of the Savage Land.
